About Mule Plane Vineyard
Mule Plane Vineyard is located in the Mokelumne River AVA, which is situated within the overarching Lodi AVA. This 5-acre site is managed by John Shinn and is planted to own-rooted Carignane, which likely dates back to the late 1920s. The vineyard experiences a mild, Mediterranean climate with mild diurnal temperature swings, and also benefits from optimal exposure to the delta breezes coming off the area’s eponymous river. The site’s deep soils are mostly of fine, sandy loam, which provides an optimal home for old vine Carignane to thrive. Mule Plane gets its name from the mule-drawn plane that John Shinn’s grandfather regularly saw his uncle using to level the field before planting. The site is Lodi Rules Sustainable certified.
